Felicity Huffman’s dog Tucker B. Jones has access that some only dream about: he runs with the desperate housewives of Wisteria Lane. “He hangs out with me in the trailer, he comes to the set, he goes in the wardrobe trailer, goes in the hair and makeup trailer,” says Huffman. So what secrets has he uncovered? He has not shared anything yet, but perhaps the right house dog would be able to coax things out of him.
Tucker was adopted from the Pet Orphans shelter in Los Angeles, one of the shelters that is a part of Iams Home for the Animals: a program with which Huffman is involved. The program’s goal is to place 1 million dogs and cats in loving homes during the holiday season. Of particular importance to Huffman is the program’s educational element, which gives adopters an information kit about raising pets. “You can have a long, loving adoption. It’s not just the honeymoon period and then they eat your pair of shoes and you’re like, ‘Why did I do this?’” explains Huffman.
Huffman’s family also has an adopted rabbit and an adopted hamster, plus two young daughters, so it’s a full house! Tucker’s brother, Murphy, was adopted by family friends, and he often hangs out at Huffman’s.
Despite the somewhat hectic atmosphere, Tucker remains easy-going and relaxed. Huffman says of her daughters, “They dress him up, they put bows in his ears, they put him in tutus. My daughter had her adopted rabbit ride Tucker the other day.” This dog puts up with a lot! He’s definitely not high-maintenance, like some of his friends from Wisteria Lane.
Huffman also gave Animal Fair the inside scoop on the canine personalities of the other housewives. Nicolette Sheridan is “one of those really elegant Russian Wolfhounds that are athletic and long and aristocratic.” Eva Longoria was harder for Huffman to pin down, but she finally decided on a Jack Russell Terrier, since it embodied Longoria’s characteristics of being “beautiful and loving” but also “fiery and rascally.” Finally, Teri Hatcher would be an Italian Greyhound or a Whippet, because she’s “really smart” and “has a lot of energy.” Despite their diverse personalities, there are no dogfights on the set. “We’re just really happy to be there,” says Huffman of her cast mates.
