Who would have thought that this little Chihuahua would be running Hollywood’s most chic Mexican eatery? Dog-loving husband and wife team Carlos “Big Daddy” Adley and Ava Berman opened the Velvet Margarita Cantina (VMC) a little over two years ago, but they could not have done it without the love and inspiration of their adopted pet, Margarita. “When the kids were grown and gone, I felt a void in my life. I never thought a dog would be able to fill such an empty place in my heart, but Margarita is just as much a part of the family and the business as any other member,” explained Ava Berman. “She may be a small dog, but she is a big part of our lives.”
Family members are not the only ones who adore her: Margarita plays host for her many celebrity guests, making the VMC a true Hollywood hot spot. Her admirers include everyone from Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Aniston to Jamie Foxx and countless rock and roll stars. If this is what it’s like to be a dog, we could only be so lucky!
When Carlos, Ava and Margarita opened the VMC, they had a vision to share original family recipes, which have been passed down five generations, with the public, and to decorate the restaurant in a way that pays homage to the historical Mexican culture that is too frequently forgotten. While the velvet paintings, marionettes and sombreros do just that, it’s obvious that the best addition to the decoration and spirit of the VMC is Margarita, the restaurant’s unofficial mascot. Talk about authenticity – the Chihuahua has more history in Mexico than any other dog. What a perfect pairing!
A precious pup, a fresh, healthy and delicious menu, a uniquely fashionable atmosphere – sounds too good to be true, but this family run, traditionally trendy restaurant located in the heart of Hollywood dishes out some of the best Mexican food Los Angeles has to offer!
