What to Know about Bernedoodle Rescues?

All 4 Paws Bernedoodle rescue 600x600 1

Bernedoodles showcase the best traits of poodles and the Mountain Bernese dogs and make cheerful, active pets. They are excellent choices for families with kids since they tend to be friendly and highly intelligent. Bernedoodles are high-maintenance pets, and there are several things you should consider before adopting a Bernedoodle.

Since these doodles are expensive, you may have trouble finding rescues. The best thing to do is sign-up with a few Bernedoodle rescue platforms. However, there are several points about Bernedoodle you need to know before you start looking for a rescue.

Determine if Bernedoodles are the right choice for you and your family by assessing your financial stability level, space limitations, and time constraints (if any).

Rescues May Have Trouble Adapting

While Bernedoodles are typically friendly, happy-com-lucky-go dogs, Bernedoodle rescues may have trouble adapting. Rescue dogs sometimes suffer from anxiety and depression caused by internalized trauma.

Be patient if your rescue seems distant, gloomy, or passive initially. Trauma may materialize in the form of withdrawal or hiding when you try to interact with the doodle, excessive paw licking, and refusal to eat well.

It may take the Doodle six to eight weeks to adjust to the new home and feel safe. The famous “3-3-3 rule” applies to all adopted dogs and rescue dogs and applies to Bernedoodles as well.

Know Exactly What a Bernedoodle Looks Like

Bernedoodles are hybrid dogs that come in different colors and sizes. So you have trouble establishing if the dog you plan to adopt is a Bernedoodle (especially if the dog is a rescue).

Additionally, you may also come across miniature Bernedoodles or “tiny and toy versions” that are smaller than standard doodles. A regular Berne can grow up to 29 inches. They usually have wavy or curly coats of fur that come in multiple colors.

Excellent Therapy and Service Dogs

Bernedoodles are an excellent choice if you are looking for a service dog or therapy dog. This dog breed is incredibly affectionate and highly intelligent.

These Doodles make excellent service dogs for people with fatal allergies, hearing or a visual impairment, and other issues. Since they are obedient, loyal, and friendly, they also make good service dogs for people with depression and anxiety.

Another feature that makes Bernedoodles excellent service and therapy dogs is that they rarely exhibit aggressive behavior or bark frequently.

They Make Great Apartment Dogs

Although Bernedoodles are apartment dogs, they are well-suited for apartment living. However, Bernedoodles don’t enjoy being left alone for more than a few hours. So if you work outside the home or will be absent at home for long hours due to other reasons, this breed may not be the ideal choice for you.

Miniature or toy Bernedoodles are better suited for apartment living than standard doodles. If you live in an apartment, ensure you give your dog playtime.

Choose a Reliable Rescue Platform

Consider the reliability and reputation of the rescue platform or agency you choose if you plan to adopt a Bernedoodle rescue. Do detailed research on the best rescue platforms in your location and ensure they don’t engage in animal cruelty activities.

Organizations like IDOG rescue and Rehome, Doodle Rock Rescue, and Poodle and Pooch rescue are the best-known organizations for Bernedoodle and other poodle breed rescues. Check if the platform follows the necessary legal and technical compliance rescue centers are expected to follow.

While most Bernedoodle rescue centers offer online services, it’s best to visit the center in person to understand how they work. Read reviews and testimonials offered by former dog owners. Find out if the rescue organization follows an “owner-surrounded” approach or “shelter-based” approach, or both.

Get Medical Examinations

Advanced rescue centers usually offer medical examinations and other inspection services to ensure the doodle is healthy. Bernedoodles are typically healthy dogs with high immunity levels.

However, you must check if the dog has pre-existing issues before the rescue or adoption. This is especially vital for adult Bernedoodles. While the chances of Bernedoodles turning up in dog shelters is rare, it’s essential to check for ticks, fleas, and other insects if your Bernedoodle is a shelter rescue.

In some cases, the Bernedoodle may need therapy and rehabilitation treatment before they are ready to go to a new home.

Be Specific when Searching

Some rescue platforms allow you to specify the size, color, and age of your desired Bernedoodle rescue. The platform will then match you with rescue dogs that best meet your specifications.

Final Thoughts

Hurt or neglected Bernedoodles may exhibit aggressive behavior in the beginning. So it’s vital to spend considerable time laying and interacting with your new doodle to help them adapt fast.
