The hurricanes that struck the Gulf coast region wreaked havoc on the livelihood and neighborhoods of thousands of people and animals! Animal Fair has provided up-close and personal rescue stories told by brave and heroic men and women who compassionately went to the hard hit region on missions to save animal lives.
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, with many pets – and their owners – left stranded, animal lovers have risen to the occasion, giving their time and energy to save as many pets as possible. The Washington Animal Rescue League is no exception, with devoted volunteers making the 20-hour journey to New Orleans on three separate occasions to rescue animals in need. The volunteers went from home to home, rescuing the starving, dehydrated dogs and cats who had been left behind.
Chanel, a small Bichon Frise, was left trapped in his home in the French quarter when his owner was forced to evacuate. When the WARL arrived, there was no sign of Chanel – until finally breathing was heard coming out of the bedroom. He was on the verge of death and would not have made it if the WARL had not rushed him to the triage unit. Under the skilled care of a veterinarian, Chanel returned to good health. Thanks to the WARL, Chanel and many other animals have been saved from certain death. To the many people that have lost so much already, losing their furry family members would be devastating. The WARL and other volunteers rescuing animals in New Orleans are helping more than the animals – they’re rescuing part of the victim’s lives as well.
