On the cult phenomena television series Gossip Girl, Matthew Settle plays the handsome, charming, hard-working, ex-rocker father of two. In real life, Settle plays the same father-type (minus the rocker past) with his animal family, Zoe, Jackie and Moby. Ironically enough, Settles dogs (and cat) somewhat resemble the Upper East Side characters that Settle is all too familiar with on the show.

Settle and his wife’s first addition to the animal family was their Chihuahua Zoe who was obtained after Settle’s wife had lost her own Chihuahua to a Los Angeles thief. “When we first got Zoe the first thing we did was put her in a tea cup to take a picture. She was the size her head is now and she had a big belly. She bounced everywhere it was as if someone had filled her with helium… and then later when she grew up I tried to fill her with helium but my wife wouldn’t let me,” Settle jokes about Zoe, who has quickly become a pampered princess. Zoe is such well coiffed Chihuahua that she oftentimes sports painted nails – something Settle was initially apprehensive about. “It took me some time to get used to the looks and the ostracizing from the public for walking around with a dog with painted nails. People look at you differently, they cross to the other side of the street to avoid you, but I got used to it and now I embrace it.”

While Zoe was enjoying 100% Upper East Side spoiled treatment, she had no idea that a second dog was on its way. Much to Zoe’s chagrin, Settle and his wife added Jackie to the family, named after none other than former first lady and fashion icon, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. “When we got her she kind of looked like an Onassis – I don’t know why that happened, maybe it was her personality, she kind of pranced around like she was nobility, and she’s blue, she’s a blue Pom.” Jackie’s prancing left a sour taste in Zoe’s snout and at first the two quarreled like a made-for-TV doggy drama. “When Zoe first saw Jackie she was devastated, it was almost like her world ended. They were hateful for a while but they grew to love each other, they’re best friends now,” Settle smiles, clarifying the relationship in more Gossip Girlesque jargon, “They’re BFFs.” Interestingly enough, Settle compares the two dogs to the “BFF” characters on Gossip Girl, Serena and Blair (played by Blake Lively and Leighton Meester). “I think Zoe is like Blake, kind of happy go lucky and Jackie is like Leighton. Jackie is more powerful at times in her disposition whereas Zoe is quietly powerful.”

Outside of the Settle’s canine-world exists Moby, their Persian cat. Moby is the “coolest cat” with an intense disposition – so intense that Settle believes that inside Moby exists a personality from another life. “I think he lived before – he was a great scientist in his last life and now he’s like, ‘Let me out of here, let me out of here I got to tell you something, I understand the algorithm, I found the theory for everything– I figured it out but I’m stuck in this cat!’”

When Settle is not filming Gossip Girl, which he admits, “is probably the most dog laden set [he’s] ever been on,” he and his wife enjoy spending time with the family relaxing at home, watching TV and snuggling in bed. Now, with a baby on the way, the Settle brood is going to get a whole lot bigger. Let’s just hope that Zoe, Jackie and Moby can deal with a new addition to the family – and leave the drama behind them.
