Animal Fair spent the afternoon at the dog park with Richard Belzer and his energetic pooch. Belzer reprises his character Detective John Munch on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit after first portraying Munch on NBC’s critically acclaimed drama series Homicide: Life on the Street for seven seasons. The veteran stand-up comic, actor and talk show host had us in stitches! Go ahead, see for yourself.
AF: Who is this little rascal by your side?
RB: This is my dog, Django. She’s almost one years old.
We got her in France last summer and she’s probably the smartest dog that ever lived. She speaks both French and English. Her father is a working dog. He actually herds cattle in France and her mother is a Border Collie, who is out of work right now. So, her father brings home the bacon.
AF: Have you had animals all your life?
RB: Django is my first dog. I’ve never
had a dog, so I’m like ten-years old. I love her. It’s amazing. I never thought this would happen. I dream about the dog, literally. My wife and I are with her twenty-four hours a day. Dogs are like kids, but they don’t ask for money. We live in France part of the year and Django was born in the country, in a little village. When we brought her to New York City, she adjusted immediately. She’s a people watcher, like me.
AF: You are smitten! Do you foresee any more dogs in
the future?
RB: We are going to let her have one litter. She found a Border Collie boy in France that she likes. This spring, we are going to get her drunk and knocked up. We’ll have some puppies next time we see you.
AF: Ever bring Django on the set of Law and Order?
RB: Oh yeah, she’s a big hit with the crew. As long as she
can see me, she behaves. She’s very quiet and doesn’t ruin any tape. She’s so loveable, everybody loves her.
AF: Best piece of acting advice?
RB: I’m a big believer in naturalistic acting. Less is more. Don’t be too intense or get too self-conscious. Just try to make everything conversational. It’s all about low key acting.
AF: What do you love about your profession?
RB: Law and Order films in NY, which is great. Django loves Central Park. I’ve been playing the same character for many, many years, Detective Jon Munch. It’s a dream for an actor to have a steady job every season. In this profession, you get to do things you would never do in real life. You get to pull out a gun, you get to arrest people and put criminals away. They don’t call it playing for nothing!
