Like many of you, I spent my earlier years watching the great films of superstar, Paul Newman. However, the name and face of one of America’s greatest actors is not limited to the brightly lit marquee. He has graced the bottles of salad dressings and jars of popcorn products for his company Newman’s Own, which he founded in 1982.
Newman’s Own has grown since the eighties, but has remained a family affair. “Organically grown” daughter of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, Nell Newman, joined her father in the food business through the launch of Newman’s Own Organics: The Second Generation in 1993. Nell’s commitment to organic foods and sustainable agriculture led her to convince her father in establishing the all-organic product line.
The product line became a reality after Paul was won over with an all-organic style Thanksgiving dinner made by daughter Nell. “All of Newman’s Own products are ones that Dad enjoys, so we choose ones that he really loves,” said Nell. Some of the top selling products are the organic pretzels, Fig Newman’s, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups, Pop’s Corn and so many healthful, yet temptingly tasteful snacks and foods.
But the Newmans didn’t stop there. Since pets have long held a special fondness with the Newman family, expanding the product line to offer high quality, healthful organic food for more of God’s creatures became a “pet project.” Launched in October 2003, Newman’s Own Organics The Second Generation Premium Pet Food For Cats and Dogs contain certified organic ingredients of the highest quality. Unlike many commercial brands, Newman’s Own organic pet food products do not use antibiotics, hormones, chemical ingredients or artificial preservatives, colors or additives.
Paul Newman’s success in film and food has made him someone to be admired. But, it is his role in charitable contributions to both pets and people that make him a true role model. Nell credits her father with teaching her by example to be socially responsible, politically involved and philanthropic. “All the charity money generated by the sale of the pet food will go to organizations that support animals’ well being.”
