They say every dog has his day. For Lola, Kimberly Schlegel’s Chihuahua, that day was a doggie garden party held in honor of Lola’s fifth birthday. Says Schlegel, the socialite and founder of party rental business, R.S.V.P.- Soirée, “I had wanted to do something like this for a long time. I thought that all of Lola’s little doggie friends would enjoy it.î The festivities were held at the Dallas home of Kimberly’s parents, Bob and Myrna Schlegel. “My parents have such a beautiful garden,” she explains, “and Lola has so much fun there.”
What a day it was! Decorated all in pink, the garden was a tribute to Lola’s favorite color. A buffet meant that canine callers could choose from between “30 to 40 different types of doggie treats,” describes Schlegel, all sitting in large glass containers around the garden. There was a water bar, naturally, serving fabulous flavors like, lemon, cucumber, mango, rosewater, Evian, and toilet water (faux, of course.) The playful pooches ran unfettered through the garden, cooling themselves in the spectacular fountains (doggie janitors wiped away any minor indiscretions.) Lola frolicked happily with her pals, pretty in a collar of pink roses, a diamond in the ruff.
For human companions, hors d’oeuvres were passed, featuring delectable doggie-themed dishes such as “Chihuahua Cheese Quesadillas”, fire hydrant-shaped tea sandwiches and hot dogs crafted to look like bones. There was a string quartet, of course, since after all, this was a proper garden party. But the musicians also catered to their hostess, playing such favorites as, “Whatever Lola Wants,”, “Copacabana” and “Who Let the Dogs Out?”
Many of the top dogs were in attendance. Fitness guru, Larry North and his wife, Melanie Peskett, arrived with their Volpino, Puff. The Consul General of Mexico, Ezequiel Padilla Couttolenc, and his wife, Carmen, were accompanied by their Yorkie, Koncha. Jewelry designer, Elizabeth Showers, toted her mother’s (famed interior designer, Jan Showers) Yorkie, Sweetie. Genghis Grill founder, Jeff Sinelli, was attended by his white Lab, Genghis. Former Dallas Stars owners, Norman and Kelly Green, escorted their spaniels, both of whom sported Hermes scarves with Dallas Stars leashes.
Lola’s four-legged friends received yogurt-dipped doggie bones as favors, while their human companions were offered dog-shaped cookies. “Everyone had such a wonderful time,” Schlegel recalls, fondly. In fact, the event was so successful that Schlegel plans to do it all again next year, this time to benefit animal welfare organizations. “In the future,” she explains, “I’d like this to be a fundraising event.” Now that would be a real dogsend.
