Sami Hayek has been working in the industry of furniture and architectural design for nine years. His work is greatly respected and has been showcased at the Los Angeles Pacific Design Center and the Paris Sulon Du Mueble. Throughout the years, Hayek has established quite a roster of clients and his breathtaking designs can be found in publications such as The New York Times, Interior Design, In Style and Vanity Fair. Animal Fair had the pleasure of sitting down with Hayek and his gorgeous dog, Blue, to talk shop.
AF: Tell us how you got the design bug!
SH: I became very interested in design and decided I wanted to do something related to creating… making art happen. A space has shapes and forms and personality. It has a tremendous effect on you. I draw on my life experiences with people and things that I encounter to come up with my designs. Everything has to relate back to the concept. Every item is a different project that I approach. I never get bored.
Everything is new.
AF: What makes your designs unique?
SH: My theory is that if you see architecture or create it again, you have limited yourself a lot. Let’s say I want to do a task based on your personality (color, shape, texture). I will think about you and your attributes and start to draw lines that represent those characteristics. If you are gentle, aggressive, etc. An aggressive line shows something different than if I want to show comfort. I am also very interested in the best quality for the price. I will incorporate expensive technologies and sophisticated materials for a higher end. It is important to explore an unlimited range of possibilities.
AF:
You share a dog with your sister, Salma Hayek. Tell us about him!
SH: His name is Blue and we’ve had him for a year now.
He’s extremely smart, very focused. When he wants to play, he will not go away. He will stay there with a toy in his mouth … maybe 30 minutes … until you play with him. He doesn’t bark. He just waits there patiently. Blue is big, but he’s a very nice dog. He only barks if something is going on. He doesn’t waste his barks!
AF: Did you grow up with animals?
SH: Oh yes! I love animals. We grew up with deer, parrots, cats and dogs. I have been inspired by animals and use these experiences in my work. Once, I went to Africa and I had a lion right in front of me. It was one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen. You could hear the lion call from a mile away and my whole body just shook. I felt the roaring go through me. Moments like that are indescribable. This is where true inspiration comes from.
