The whole world is abuzz with the call for environmentally sound products manufactured with preserving Earth’s resources in mind. A legislation is being passed which will require businesses, residential dwellings, and industrial plants to become more Earth-conscious by cutting down on unnecessary energy expenditures, promoting the use of recycled materials and supplies. By promoting a greener society, we are preserving our natural resources while reducing pollution and excessive waste. As we take steps to become environmentally responsible, we must remember our four-legged companions and try to get them involved in the movement, too!
Cathy Finn, founder of PristinePlanet.com – an online resource for ecologically responsible products – says that along with organic dog shampoos and soaps, there are a lot of new products geared towards the green pet. Finn comments, “Basically, you want to look for products that are recycled and chemical-free. You should choose organic pet beds, dishes, and foods. It is especially important to have recyclable, non-toxic toys because pets don’t have hands so when they play, they have everything in their mouths and you should try to keep toxins from building up in their systems.”
Most pet stores now carry biodegradable bags that provide a germ-free alternative to the bags left over from your last visit to the supermarket. These eco-friendly bags allow you to compost doggie waste in the privacy of your backyard for later use on non-edible gardening. Tough curb laws have owners working double time to scoop the poop, often with plastic bags destined to spend the next 1,000 years in a landfill or dump but thankfully, there are now options available for city dwellers who don’t have the luxury of allowing their pets to do their business in a backyard. Flushable poop bags allow you to pick up after your dog and to simply flush it down the toilet so that their waste goes to the same place yours does: to a waste treatment plant where it will be purified and put aside for future use.
Making the choice to have a green mentality in your life – including pet care and recreation – is a small step that will have large impact on the planet, preserving Mother Nature’s resources for people and pets for generations to come.
