Most people associate Fabiola Beracasa (the daughter of Veronica Hearst, widow of publishing heir Randolph Hearst) as a fashion diehard. However, this Venezuelan stunner is just as passionate about her best friends. “Love me, love my dogs! That’s what it is. Nothing more, nothing less.”
Beracasa, an appraiser-buyer at SellJewelry admits to lugging more than her briefcase and coffee to work. “I take both my Chihuahuas, Maya and Alfonzo, everywhere. I take them to work when I’m going away for the weekend because they have to come with me!” She is thrilled at the positive impact her four-legged friends have on her co-workers. “Are you kidding me? Everyone LOVES them. I don’t take them in all the time, because no one would get anything done. Maya can sit quietly on my lap all day, but Alfonzo gets restless and wants to play. My co-workers just melt over them both!”
Reminiscing from a recent visit, “I put jewelry on them for fun at work. If we get a really pretty, sparkling bracelet in, I want to see what it looks like on Maya or Alfonzo. It’s pretty funny. But I don’t bejewel my pets on a regular basis.” It’s true, these dogs are definitely not fashionistas. Trendy outfits are a no-go. “I don’t dress dogs. I have Chihuahuas! They are ridiculous little creatures as it is,” Fabiola laughs. Still, she can’t resist spoiling them and admits they chow down happily on people food from time to time.
There is no mistaking the proud parent excitement in Beracasa’s voice when she describes her babies. “Alfonzo is so cute, it’s nuts. He’s only one-month-old and looks like a cotton ball! He’s a circus dog–doing loops, jumps, leaps. Alfonzo loves everybody. I call him Alfie for short–but that name is only for those who know him intimately.” By contrast, Maya is six-years-old and more rigid. “She’s strict and independent, while Alfonzo is as loosey-goosey as they get! Maya is a very loyal dog. I’m her favorite. She’ll be nice to people who are nice to her, but she won’t hesitate to nip at them when she feels like it!”
Apparently, her love for animals runs in the family. “I have an eccentric aunt in Venezuela who has forty dogs in her house. She brings them all in. I think it’s so sweet. She’s probably the most well protected woman ever!” Fabiola herself has a total of five dogs. Besides Maya and Alfonzo, she has three more pugs at her mother’s home in Florida. “I adopted them from pug rescues when I was in college. I just can’t help myself! But it’s very hard to keep them in New York. They are older and live in Florida because they love the warm weather. I see them all the time. They are just happy as clams to run on the beach every day.”
Clearly, Fabiola Beracasa is devoted to her dogs and would do anything for them. Which includes licking the workday humdrum by bringing in her little bundles of joy whenever possible! And sure, diamonds are a girl’s best friend. But for this Manhattan sensation–the key to her heart is to love her dogs. Nothing more, nothing less.
