Stars of Eric & Jessie: Game On (on E!), Eric Decker, the starting wide receiver of and newest addition to the New York Jets, and his wife, country singer and songwriter, Jessica James Decker, recently added even more to their packed plate—and we’re not just talking about their newborn!
After visiting Operation Freedom Paws in 2013—an organization that serves to empower veterans and build human-canine service teams—Eric and Jessie decided to do their part in providing the dogs for this project; the opportunity especially resonated with Jessie who grew up as a military brat and aspires to help veterans in any way that she can. The beautiful couple has now launched Deckers Dogs, which serves to raise money for the rescue, training, and care of service dogs. In establishing the Decker Dogs Foundation and Freedom Service Dogs, Eric and Jessica strive to connect service dogs in need of homes with returning military personnel and veterans in need of companions.
Upon returning from duty, many officers are left scarred, both physically and mentally. While rescuing these dogs from danger, the Deckers are also helping mend the wounds of our brave soldiers. Their family alone has already funded the rescue and training of three service dogs who have been or are waiting to be placed with their companions.
The couple knows first hand how important dogs are, as they are the parents of three rambunctious pups: two golden retrievers, Jake and Jenny, and a Yorkshire, Lulu Bell. Decker described the dogs as keeping them grounded, saying “there’s times in your careers when you’re on a high and maybe you had a couple touchdowns or she had a big gig somewhere and did well. But just being home with our dogs, knowing people in our neighborhood, saying hi to the neighbors, it’s just normal stuff.”
Eric and Jessie connect with fans and followers of their foundation via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, where they keep supporters updated on the placement of their favorite dogs. Deckers Dogs re-tweets messages like “A big thanks to all military members who are away from their families during the holidays. We appreciate the sacrifices you make,” to raise awareness and support. Their motto is “Free a Hero to Save a Hero.”
