Traveling with a pet can be a challenge. If you’re staying in a hotel or traveling by airplane, the challenge is even greater – especially if your pet is large. For example, many hotels that accept pets have weight restrictions, so it’s imperative that you call ahead of time to inquire. Likewise, airplane travel is significantly different for a large pet versus a small one. Most airlines only allow pets that weigh fifteen pounds or less to be taken on the plane; otherwise, your pet must fly in cargo.

These are the two biggest considerations in planning your vacation, but whether you have a 100-pound mastiff or a ten-pound poodle, there are a few basic precautions you should take prior to traveling with any pet. Here are five travel tips to ensure a pleasant and safe vacation with your four-legged friend.

1.) Be sure to have a vet exam your pup prior to traveling!

2) Don’t ever forget to have identification and contact information on your best friends collar – in case you get lost from each other!

3) Always bring with you your pup’s treats, favorite toys and food!

4) Book ahead – Not every travel destination is pet friendly and airlines only allow two pets in cabin per flight!

5) LOTS of water!

Have fun and be safe!
