WHAT A YUMMY DAY IT IS! Well, at least for dogs that is. Yes, International Biscuit Appreciation Day is a thing and it’s wagging into the hearts of our furry friends! This MAY just be your dog’s favorite day of the year.
So…where did the “Dog Biscuit” come from? Back in the mid 1800’s, an American by the name of James Spratt invented the first ever dog “treat.” While on a trip to England, he noticed stray and hungry dogs scavenging for food. Feeling terrible for these dogs he decided to try and look for something to give them to eat. It wasn’t long before he developed a cake-like biscuit comprised of meat, grains and veggies, calling it “Meat Fibrine Dog Cakes” – and the rest is history!
In 1908, the F.H Bennet Biscuit Co. of New York developed hard-baked, bone-shaped biscuits compromised of certain minerals and milk/meat products. Can you guess what this famous biscuit is called? None other than MILKBONE! Milkbone is one of the leading dog biscuit distributers in the world, providing consumers with a variety of bones to choose from!
Some of the top chew biscuit brands are Milkbone, Purina and Pedigree! The biscuit has become so advanced that it has taken new shapes and sizes and can even promote certain health benefits! Greenies are green, toothbrush shaped biscuits that aid in dog mouth care! Biscuits are even in bacon form with Purina’s Beggin Strips! Who doesn’t love bacon?!
Dogs have enjoyed these treats for centuries and they have just gotten more delicious as time goes on! Did you know you could now make your own dog biscuits? It’s not even that hard! Anyone can be a doggie chef! Check out these awesome doggie biscuit recipes!
