With Labor Day weekend upon us, dog parents are contemplating the best way to enjoy their time off with their furry best friend. From swimming to barbecues, This weekend is the perfect opportunity for you, your friends, and your pup to have some quality bonding time! One thing to keep in mind, however; is that if you want to have fun, there are certain preliminary precautions to make sure your dog is safe and sound over this fun, pleasant weekend!
Labor Day Dos:
Throw a barbecue: While you and your friends are grilling hamburgers and hot dogs, your dog will love the opportunity to run around outside. Perhaps your friends will bring their dogs over for a play date!
Taking your pup on picnics: Picnics are a great way to enjoy nature and eat comfortably. Bring a fresh basket full of food, a huge blanket, and a bone for your pup to crew, and you’ll be all set to go!
Relax: Sometimes, you can bond with your pet simply by cuddling on the couch or watching a movie. You both are spending quality time not doing much, but you’re still together!
Take your pup to the beach: Surfs up! Fish aren’t the only ones who can have fun in the sea. You and your dog can enjoy the salty air and water on a fun filled beach day.
Take your pup to the park: A good run in the park or a light walk is the perfect way to spend time with your dog in a healthy way for both of you!
Labor Day Don’ts:
Leave your dog in the car: Many people travel to visit relatives on this weekend. It is important to remember that the temperatures are high outside and that by leaving your dog in the car, you’re putting your pup in danger.
Don’t keep them in the hot sun for too long: Some people get sunburned, and some don’t. Same happens with dogs. The little hairless ones get sunburned very easily, so if you take a trip to the beach or anywhere in the sunlight, your pooch will love you if you pack a nice little pouch of dog sunscreen and water!
Let your dog swim unwatched: You should always keep an eye on your dog if it’s swimming, especially if your dog is not a very good swimmer.
Give human food to pets: If you are at a party with your pooch, or at your own party, make sure you tell your friends that human food belongs strictly to humans and that’s that! Buy treats to bring if your dog gets hungry.
Travel with a dog who is unaccustomed to traveling: If your dog is easily car sick or doesn’t do well in cars in general, don’t bring them on that road trip from Connecticut to California with you. It is best for you as a pet parent and your pet to board them and save them the anxiety of traveling, and furthermore, save you the anxiety of being distracted while driving!
This weekend is sure to be fun-packed for both you and your pup! As a pet parent, remember to make sure the most special member of your family, aka your doggie, is properly looked after. With these tips in mind, I hope you and your pup have a fantastic Labor Day Weekend!
