Pet owners love to show off their pets, and what better way to do so than by taking pictures on their cell phones? Just because you are taking pictures with an iPhone or Blackberry, and not a fancy DSLR with intricate features and settings, doesn’t mean your photos can’t be great. Use these tips to get the best pictures of your pets that you possibly can.
Get down
Make sure you’re not towering above your pet when you take the picture! Squat down, get on your knees, or even lay down on your stomach in order to get on eye-level with your pet. Otherwise, you may just end up with pictures of his back.
Find good lighting
This may seem like an unimportant step, but finding a space with good light quality will drastically improve your chances of getting a good picture. It comes down to the way that cameras work: when a camera takes a photo, it opens a hole, called an aperture, in the lens, and releases the shutter, which allows the light to reach the sensor for a certain amount of time. The more light there is, the faster the shutter will move. When photographing pets (which are bound to not sit still) this quick shutter movement means you’re more likely to get a clear photo.
Using your iPhone or Blackberry’s flash function will not substitute for good lighting! The shutter movement will still go slowly, and the flash will wash the picture out.
Bribe your pet
It’s hard to get your pet to sit still, especially sitting still and looking happy. The best way to do it is to bribe your pet with his favorite food or a toy. Try tapping a small treat on the top of your phone to get your pet to look right at the lens.
Set up a fun photo-trap
What can’t your pet resist – jumping in to a pile of leaves? Drinking out of the toilet? Scratching up a cushion? Whatever it may be, you can use it to lure your pet into some great action shots. Stand at the ready with your phone and let your pet loose on the predetermined challenge you’ve set up for him.
Create a colorful background
If you have time to set up the shot, use simple but colorful rugs, blankets and toys to brighten up the photo. It’s an easy thing to do that will make your pet stand out
