Animal Fair Media wants to congratulate Panut Hadisiswoyo for winning The 2015 WHITLEY AWARD for Conservation in Ape Habitats, donated by the Arcus Foundation! Panut does extraordinary work with saving the endangered orangutans in the Rain Forest of North Sumatra. Panut has created a public awareness and orangutan rescue campaign through his organization, Orangutan Information Centre (OIC), and partnerships with the Ministry of Forestry, Ministry of Internal Affairs, and other local organizations.
Panut’s mission is to halt deforestation in one of the largest national parks in the world; the Mount Leuser National Park, a conglomeration of several smaller nature reserves and forests covering 1,094,692 hectares of land. His goal is to establish a more sustainable habitat in the remaining and future forests.
The results of rising local deforestation and fast profits has directly affected the rain forest orangutan population, which has dwindled from an estimated high of 100,000 in 1971 to only 15,000-25,000 today.
The biodiversity of the Mount Leuser National Park is enormous, and conserves a mountainous terrain, swamps, beach forests, lowland rain forest, and alpine forest, as well as 8,500 plant species and 700 animal species residing in the park, including the critically endangered two-horned Sumatran rhinoceros and the Sumatran orangutan.
Panut’s amazing rescue work includes developing an early detection system to resolve human-wildlife conflict, such as crop raiding, before it can happen in the national park. He also believes in educating the next generations to help preserve and protect the environment and wildlife. Panut partnered with over 300 schools, reaching more than 15,000 students and invites them to conservation camps run by the schools.
