It was just two colors and a classic dog name that moved Shawn Henderson to create his custom dog bed, “Spot.” “I was first inspired by the color combination of chocolate brown and hot pink,” says Henderson. “I wanted to do something kind of bold and graphic, then I started thinking of basic dog names like Spot, and the whole circle idea came from that.”
Henderson, who just recently took home his one-year-old Schnoodle, Alfie, is quite familiar with designing for – and around – pets. In his three and a half years in his own business, Henderson has already designed two homes with clients’ pets in mind. In one project, Henderson worked the color scheme of a room around the color of the client’s Shepard mix to camouflage its shedding. In another, Henderson treated a client’s already durable furniture with fabric protector to further proof pet-proof the home.
This pet friendly designer, who describes his style as “clean and sophisticated without being too cold or sterile,” also offers some additional suggestions for those wanting to achieve both a posh home and a happy pet. “There are a lot of new, high tech fabrics that are made of synthetics and look and feel like natural fabric but are extremely durable.”
Alfie, Henderson’s brand new addition, spends his days in the office with the rest of the team. Henderson tells Animal Fair that he often spends time sketching dog beds for his pooch and hopes the work will materialize in the near future.
