Famed Jazz photographer Carol Friedman and her cat Nicky have cuddled up with some of Carol’s biggest celebrity subjects and now Nicky the cat is the subject of a brand new book and CD collection!
Carol Friedman has been taking photos of jazz musicians for years and her favorite furry friend Nicky is always along for the ride. Having spent time with Lionel Hampton, Lena Horne, Roy Eldridge and Quincy Jones – Nicky the cat has become one purr-fect celebrity herself!
This holiday season, animal lovers and music fans alike are sure to fall in love with Nicky The Jazz Cat and “Nicky’s Jazz for Kids” CD. Written and compiled by Friedman herself, Nicky the Jazz Cat is illustrated with photographs of Nicky and her hottest star studded friends of the Jazz world.
Friedman’s CD have kid and pet ears alike standing straight up. This child-friendly collection of jazz features performances by legendary artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Cab Calloway, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Bassie, Tony Bennet and more!
“I chose songs that – through the spirit of the performance, the lesson in the lyric, or their undeniable swing – would give children their first glimpse of the magic of jazz,” said Friedman.
Recently having worked with Bruce Springstein and Yo Yo Ma, Friedman says her subjects are one of a kind. “These men and women are the irreplaceable ones,” she said. “Nicky and these jazz legends were fast friends. They admired one another and always had their own special magic going on. Their encounters were like the music – heartfelt, spontaneous, first takes – improvisation at is best,” added Friedman.
After writing the book, Friedman decided to add another asset to the project. She added, “The book opened a wonderful new cultural window for kids, but I realized that they needed to hear the music as well. The songs had to swing and effectively capture a child’s curiosity through rhyme, rhythm or story. I had to eliminate many great recordings that had lyrics not fit for young ears.”
The book/ CD collection is available for purchase at www.nickythejazzcat.com and at www.amazon.com. The book is priced at $ 16.95, the CD at $16.98.
