Jeff Eyre is Director of Humane Services at Spring Farm CARES, an animal sanctuary in  Clinton, New York. Eyre volunteers as a member of the National Disaster Animal Response Team of the Humane Society of the United States. He was deployed as part of the HSUS disaster response to Hurricane Katrina. Eyre arrived in Jackson Mississippi on September 2nd and assisted in the rescue operations for the Gulfport Animal shelter. He was then sent to Gonzales, Louisiana and Lamar Dixon Equine Center, the largest temporary animal shelter ever.

Eyre was assigned to field operations in New Orleans and operated one of the last few Louisiana SPCA trucks left. He was responsible for transporting large animals in the back of a vehicle and making sure they had plenty of water and air conditioning in the hot summer heat.

“This picture captures a happy dog who just really wanted to be held. Like many of the animals I encountered, they just wanted the touch of a human. We were part of several vehicles traveling down Magazine Street, a few blocks from the zoo, when we stopped to check on a veterinarian’s office. We saw a pit bull running down the street and came around the back of the building. My partner was confronted by this beagle who just had so much to tell us, he got me laughing at a time that was much needed, I don’t really know who was rescued, he or I,” Eyre reflects.

“At the Jefferson Feed Store, the owners not only kept open for the public but made it into a forward triage center and holding area for the cities animal rescue teams. I can never ever say enough for what they did for the teams or the animals that went through their doors. It was just another day as hundreds of animals were treated and then transported to Lamar Dixon. I was dropping off one of my groups of animals the doors opened and in walks a squad of New York City Police, each one was holding a dog. They all were in bad condition … dehydrated … in need. As we began to treat the animals I realized the Finest were just that,” Eyre adds.
