Hey dog walker! Whether your dealing with one small pup or a pack of howling dogs, mastering the dog walk can be quite tricky. Here are a few tips to help you become the best dog walker on the block!

1.First and foremost be a leader, not a follower! Always walk in in front of your dog from the moment you leave your home, to the very second you return. Doing such will let your furry friend know that you are the leader of the pack.

2. Make sure the leash is short enough to keep in arms distance but long enough for your dog’s comfort. Keeping the leash short will allow you to maintain control of your dog(s). Another helpful tip would be to keep the collar at the very top of the neck so you can communicate with your dog and correct him when needed. The lower down the neck the collar, the stronger of a pull your dog has on you.

3. The most common problem faced by Pack Leaders are resistance and the urge to run. Some dogs don’t want to walk; they want to run! So let them. Go for a jog, use roller-blades, or go biking with your dog to drain that excess energy before trying to address the behavior.

4. Treats, treats and more treats! Reward your pup. We all know how energetic and exciting dog walks can be for our fury friends so when deserved, reward them by letting them sniff around and relieve themselves. This allows you to still lead but still giving your pack freedom.

5. “Bone” appetit! By providing a meal after your dogs walk, you have allowed your dog to “work” for food and water. By doing this your dog looks forward to his/her walk and learns to adhere to instructions.

We hope these few tips will help you become a great leader of your pack! A good leader leads to better followers. And don’t forget to set a good example by always picking up after your dog! Happy Walking!
