Hosted by founders Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters, the 7th annual Broadway Barks event took place in July’s dog days of summer at the Shubert Alley, with adorable adoptable dogs and cats up front and center stage.
Produced by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids and benefiting NYC animal shelters and adoption agencies, Broadway barked loudly to help find homeless animals a new leash on life. (As usual, our roving reporter, Lucky Diamond, schmoozed her way into everyone’s arms).
Jeff Goldblum, a cat man, whispers to Lucky! His movie credits include Cats and Dogs and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. He won the 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award for his most recent Broadway role in The Pillowman. Fun Fact: Goldblum is the commanding voice for most of the U.S. Apple computer commercials!
Billy Crudup’s most famous movie role is in the ironically titled Almost Famous. With no animals of his own at this time, perhaps Lucky will persuade him to adopt a pet) this Tony nominee has been busy sharing the stage with Jeff Goldblum in The Pillowman. Not to be outdone by Jeff Goldblum’s Fun Fact: Crudup is also a commanding voice for the acclaimed Master Card “Priceless” commercials!
Lucky loved the chance to schmooze with David Hyde-Pierce, best known for his Emmy-winning portrayal of quirky Dr. Niles Crane on Frasier. Hyde-Pierce’s latest crowd pleasing role is the cowardly, yet gallant Sir Robin in Broadway’s Spamalot.
The Dukes of Hazzard’s Tom Wopat was a regular on Cybill and has a successful music career. Lucky isn’t the only one who howls out a tune! Versatility is this performer’s middle name (okay, it’s really Steven). He most recently appeared on Broadway in Glengarry Glen Ross.
Joanna Gleason has an extensive list of television credits and her Muriel Eubanks in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels earned her a Tony nomination. Lucky wanted to make a deal with Joanna Gleason, who happens to be the daughter of Let’s Make a Deal host Monty Hall.
By George, he’s got Lucky! Durable actor Jeffrey Tambor is currently starring as George Aaronow in Broadway’s Glengarry Glen Ross and as George Bluth Jr. in the hit ABC sitcom Arrested Development.
Delta Burke is a huge animal lover and was smitten with Lucky! Burke is best known as Suzanne Sugarbaker in Designing Women. She’s appeared in movies like What Women Want with Mel Gibson. (Forget Mel Gibson, women want their own Lucky!) Burke’s most recent Broadway role was Truvy in Steel Magnolias.
