Animal Fair had the opportunity to hang with Award winning musician and actor Rick Springfield, and his beautiful dog, Gomer. Springfield spawned the irresistible hit “Jessie’s Girl” ~ making him a teen idol and helping the working class dog sell over fifteen million albums to date. To his fans’ delight, Springfield recently reprised his role as Dr. Noah Drake on the soap General Hospital and is touring again.
AF: Your buddy here is one of the most unique looking dogs I’ve ever seen!
RS: His name is Gomer and he’s ten years old. We rescued him. He’s so beautiful and unique. I knew he was the one right away because of his big blue eyes. They’re so piercing! And he’s such a doof and so sweet, too. My wife and I have always had dogs, and we can’t imagine not having one.
AF: Does Gomer have any quirky personality traits?
RS: Gomer’s favorite thing to do is drive in the car with me. Everyone knows him around town. He loves people, but I’m his main guy. We go running on the beach all the time. He loves it. But I have to say, the car is his favorite. Every time I pick up my keys, he freaks out. If I say no, he’ll be so depressed. He loves to be petted by new people.
AF: Do you spoil him?
RS: Yeah, he sleeps with us every night. If it’s really cold, he’ll sleep under the covers and put his head on the pillow. He’s really not that vocal of a dog. He rarely barks. He loves outdoor restaurants to people watch. He wants the best thing on the menu! Meatballs and rice are his favorite, but he likes a good steak.
AF: You’re back on ABC’s daytime drama, General Hospital this year. Do you prefer singing or acting?
RS: I enjoy both for different reasons. Music you can do all the time. It’s always with me. As I get older, I’m enjoying acting more. I play the same doctor I played twenty years ago on General Hospital, Dr. Noah Drake. You don’t get a lot time to practice the scene, when you work in soap operas. It’s a great challenge though, definitely keeps your energy up. I’m having a good time.
AF: Do you take Gomer to work?
RS: He always comes to the studio with me. He actually had his own limo driver in Vegas for a while. I was working out there and I wanted him with me, but we couldn’t get him a seat on a plane. So, I had him driven up. It’s funny, a band covered my hit, “Jessie’s Girl,” about a year ago and they wanted Gomer in the video. So, he made an appearance!
AF: What’s on your plate for the future?
RS: I’m starting to tour and I’m going to be working on a new record. We just finished a high definition DVD of our last year’s concert. We’ll be selling that soon. I love touring. We do it in a great way. A few days on the road and then we come home. We all have families now, so we want to keep that balance.
