We’ve all done it. As embarrassing as it may have been, we couldn’t really help ourselves. Whether it’s baby talk or high-pitched squeaks, we’ll do anything for a smile from our favorite pooch. Some may argue that dogs can’t smile, but any dog lover is quick to disagree. It may not be as simple as a raising of their lips, or a wide screen view of their teeth, or anything else we humans consider to be facial expressions of joy, but they can let us know with all the parts of their body that they are grinning from ear to long, fuzzy ear.

Just as our own smiles are unique to our faces, each dog has its own way of showing happiness. Once we’ve determined just how our dog smiles at us (or grins, or chuckles for that matter) we go to great lengths to recreate that cheerful expression again and again, even if we look ridiculous in the process. Public displays of doggy affection are becoming more widely accepted today, but some interesting stares are sure to be cast in the direction of a cooing adult with no baby present in the middle of the ATM line. There are many tried and true methods to accomplish this peaking litter hen again at do this resort to sound; cooing and squawking their way into their pet’s hearts. And while sounds alone can usually excite even the most mundane mutts, there really is no limit to the lengths true dog lovers will go for that perky puppy reaction.

For the sophisticated pup it takes a little more than your own vocal chords to elicit a giddy wiggle. Playing to their intelligence is a sure bet to make them feel good. Letting them chase the cat once in a while without being scolded (the cats get them back for it anyway), or accidentally dropping a nibblet of their favorite human food as a treat is a sure fire way to get the inner grin going and let them think they are smarter than you (which may or may not be true).

According to Jenny Langbehn, author of the new book 97 Ways to Make a Dog Smile newly released by Workman Publishing) these are just a few of the ways we can get a happy reaction from our poochy pal. In her book she describes massage techniques and games we can do to enhance the life of our dogs. Her suggestions range from incorporating your pooch into your exercise routine (tip #62), to making a puppy Piñata (tip #52), and even to dance moves you both can enjoy (tips #20 and #95). Though we all have a favorite trick we use in getting our dogs into a great mood, variety is the spice of life and it’s a safe bet that in Langbehn’s list of 97 we will find a new and exciting way to give a little happiness back to the dog or dogs who do all they can to brighten our day.
