Gunnar Peterson is the guy who keeps celebrities, athletes, and everyday people in shape and happy. As a personal trainer, he tries to keep exercise fun and uses humor to lighten the mood.  He has worked with clients from the NFL, NHL, USTA, NBA, professional boxing, and other NCAA sports. Celebrities such as Matthew McConaughey, Nick Lachey, and Jennifer Lopez go to Peterson to stay svelte. Peterson is the author of The Workout as well as the creator of various exercise equipment, through his company, Outside Shot. One machine includes The Bottom Line, a total body exercise machine. Peterson is also the father of three children and the parent to four dogs.

Peterson also encourages exercise for pets. He spoke with us about nutrition and pet workouts. “As the pet owner it is you’re responsibility to try and keep the relationship,” Peterson said. “That’s one of the things I do with my clients, you try to keep it in the honeymoon stage. You don’t want to get where they’re dragging their feet, dreading it or finding reasons to blow it off, and the same thing with you and your dog. You have to keep it fresh.”

Although Peterson uses a lot of exercise machinery with his clients, he said that a pet can be a good piece of equipment. “The dog can be your exercise companion, they’ll want to go out with you, and they’ll keep you engaged in the process,” said Peterson. “The other thing about a dog is that they will work at any level you want to. If you want to run, they’ll run. If you want to walk, they’ll walk.”

Peterson is the proud father to  a Bull Mastiff, Cassius, two Neapolitan Mastiffs, Luigi and Donatella, and a French Mastiff named Lennox.

Lennox, who Peterson acquired from Jennifer Lopez, doesn’t like to run that much. “They like to wrestle, anything WWF style, they love that stuff,” Peterson said. As an athlete, Gunnar Peterson said Lennox would be a linebacker. “Because he’s aggressive with a smile. He’s energetic, he’s nonstop. He gives you as much energy in the first quarter as he’d give you in the last quarter,” Peterson said.

The difference between training Lenox and training Jennifer Lopez is “Jennifer is not going to play fetch. No matter how hard you try,” said Peterson. In addition, Peterson said Lenox never misses an appointment and has very little paparazzi.

Peterson said that if he were to describe Lopez as a dog, he’d say “She’s a cross between a Doberman and a Greyhound. She’s strong, she’s graceful, she’s fit, she’s composed.”

Although Gunnar Peterson loves his dogs, he prefers training people. “I don’t have to clean up after them,” said Peterson.
