The Mysterious Medinas of Morocco Reveal its Captivating Connection with the Cat

If the stray cats that wonder around the streets of New York heard what Morocco has to offer, they’d give up one of their nine lives and be on a plane in a heart beat. Deep in the windy, maze like alleys and tiny houses of the Morocco medinas lives a ritual that a New York stray dreams of. Captured by the lens of photographer Nevil Mountford, the cat is revered as the sacred animal of the land. High up in the Rif Mountains, Nevil recalls the morning feeding ritual that the cats enjoyed. At the top of the mountain where the goat, chicken, or lamb meat was cut, cats would line up patiently for their fill. There was no fighting for the food either. The cat that received a piece of meat would polish it off peacefully and sometimes return to the butcher for seconds.
