Join Jon and Tracy Stewart for Farm Sanctuary’s 2015 Gala this Saturday, October 24th at the Plaza! This exclusive event will be attended by the likes of Jesse Eisenberg, Emily Deschanel, Wendy and Baby Hope, and more surprise guests!

This gala is being held by Farm Sanctuary, which was founded in 1986 with the intention of combating the abuses of factory farming, and encouraging new awareness and understanding about farm animals. Today, it is the leading farm animal rescue and protection organization in the world.

Farm Sanctuary founders Gene and Lorri Bauston began their not-for-profit in a Volkswagen van, financing their cause by selling veggie dogs at Grateful Dead shows. Now, some 70,000 members strong, Farm Sanctuary advocates for animal rights through direct rescue programs as well as legislation and public awareness crusades.

Two shelters, one in upstate New York, one in Northern California, form the cornerstone of the Sanctuary mission. Set on sprawling lush acreage, the shelters are filled with furry goodwill ambassadors. These representatives include Webster, a floppy-eared bunny who went AWOL from an inhumane farm, and Trooper, a calf who survived being used in rodeo practice and then nearly starved after being discarded. Farm Sanctuary shelters Webster, Trooper and hundreds of other animals as part of the  Adopt-a-Farm-Animal program where supporters contribute to the animals’ rehabilitation and continued care.

Farm Sanctuary not only provides a haven for animals, but also a welcome respite for city slickers who need to escape the stresses of urban living.  At Farm Sanctuary’s vegetarian bed and breakfast in Watkins Glen, New York, guests wake to the cry of roosters, enjoy the unspoiled beauty of the landscape and gently pass the day surrounded by the charms of creatures great and small.

The Stewart’s are no strangers to animal rescue. The couple purchased a farm in New Jersey that they plan to turn into a sanctuary for rescued farm animals. On this land, animals saved from factory farms and animal agriculture industries will be able to live out there lives as companions of humans, rather than subjects of their consumption.

This move may appear to come out of left field for many viewers of the Daily Show. However, animal activism and awareness have become a growing part of the Stewarts’ lives. Tracey, Editor in Chief of Moomah magazine, has not only devoted an entire issue to veganism as a lifestyle, but has also authored a book Do Unto Animals. She states, “interacting with animals as friends instead of using them for human consumption is life-changing” – something one can truly experience visiting a farm sanctuary.

The Stewart’s were made aware of this lifestyle choice and the issues surrounding animal agriculture when Tracey Stewart stumbled upon Gene Baur’s book, LIVING THE FARM SANCTUARY LIFE: The Ultimate Guide to Eating Mindfully, Living Longer, and Feeling Better Every Day
