Simon Sabag and Joey Mills of Manhattan’s trendy Simon Salon give us the scoop:
Ride the Wave: Simon Sabag gives us the skinny on the do’s and don’ts of spring hair! It’s all about being natural this season. Hair is getting longer, so let it grow! You have to be ready for a ponytail come summer. Your hair’s got wave you said? All the better. No need to be severely straight these days; that sexy natural look is what it’s all about – the “get out of the ocean and let it air dry” feel – think Brooke Shields in The Blue Lagoon. A good mid-length to long cut is called for, with layers starting from the chin down.
Color Me Beautiful: Hair colors are getting softer for the spring. Trade in your winter red for a nice shade of brown, with some natural highlighting. We are no longer causing damage with overprocessing and bleach, the newest trend is using a steam machine that activates the color without drying out your hair.
Easing the Frizz: Winter cold and indoor heating are a lethal combination for the hair. By Spring your locks certainly need a moisture boost! Some great products to try: Aestelance Moisture Pack ($27), a deep sea mud moisturizing treatment for the hair and scalp to keep those locks looking their best; Graham Webb’s Styling Stick Straight ($15) to de-frizz; and Blonde Glow Glisten Spray ($25) to give your hair shimmer and shine.
If your tresses are in need of a super-moisturizing treatment (it was a brutal winter), you can either ask your salon for a solution, or can try tackling it yourself! Going at it alone? All you need to do is check your refrigerator! With some old soft avocados, some mayo and olive oil, your hair will get the moisture it craves. Just mash up the avocado, add a spoon of mayo and olive oil. Stir the mixture and then work it into the ends of your hair. Wrap it in aluminum foil and leave it to set for 20 minutes. Wash and condition your hair as you’d normally do. And guess what? You can do this for your dog too! If you think your hair gets dry, think of your pooch’s coat! This mixture won’t harm a hair on your dog’s head, and will restore his shiny and glossy coat that had been in hibernation.
Brow Now: A good brow makes a face! Joey Mills, eyebrow guru gives us his tips! The worst thing you can do is over-wax – it can destroy your brows permanently. Plucking is the best way to maintain a naturally shaped brow. We are all so busy these days that we need to be doing versatile makeup that can move from day to evening with minimal effort. Daytime blushed; nighttime contour. Like you bring a special scarf or jacket to turn your daywear into nightwear, so should you have an extra lip pencil and shadow to add more contour for the evening. Necessities for the spring? A pale orangy-peach concealer. Try either Joey’s own (but you have to be a client, he insists he knows the face before he sells his wares) or make your own with a blend of pink and beige. He warns – always apply concealer with a clean brush – Ivory liquid soap is a safe bet. Make your lipstick last with this quick trick: dab conditioner on your lips, then use a pencil to color lips (don’t just line them!) Then break out a very pale frosty highlighter and only apply to the lower lip. Feeling cheeky? Joey recommends using color to contour your cheeks, starting on forehead and working down to the apple of your cheek, creating the illusion of a bone structure we all wish we were born with.
We followed Animal Fair’s own Wendy and Lucky Diamond to Conair’s Connecticut headquarters to get a peek at the latest and greatest! While Wendy got her hair straightened with Rusk’s Thermal Str8 , Lucky got herself coiffed as well, with Conair’s newest line of pet products. Here are the results. The Japanese straightening method retexurizes the hair, without drying it out. When the 5 hour process is done, just wait a couple days to allow it to set and then you can style your hair however you want (even add curlers if you want). It’s as if you are starting over with a whole new head of hair! “I’ve never been happier,” says Wendy, “and since our day of beauty, Lucky too has exuded renewed confidence – she’s got a spring in her step, no cowlicks, and I can once again see her beautiful eyes. She’s like a supermodel!”
