Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Susie Essman on her relationships with animals
There is a common saying, “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” that usually references a relationship, such as that of a mother and a daughter. Well in this instance, the “apple” is the character Susie Green on Curb Your Enthusiasm and the “tree” is actress and comedian Susie Essman. Like her character on the show, Susie Essman is vivacious, straightforward and most of all, hilarious. You can’t be around Susie long without her making you smile with one of her witty comments.
When asked if she could date a guy that was any breed of dog, what would it be and why, Susie replied, “my own personal favorite is the bloodhound. I like a guy who gets my scent and pursues me to the end of the earth. Maybe I am just insecure, but being with a guy, no matter how my strong my odor is, seems like a good deal!” On HBO’s show Curb Your Enthusiasm, Essman’s character is the wife of Jeff Green, also Larry David’s manager. Essman states, “I am their nemesis, the only one that stands up to Larry and doesn’t take any crap from him what-so-ever. Larry and Jeff are always getting into trouble with Essman, and she is right there to let them have it every time.”
One male Essman could never fight with on Curb Your Enthusiasm is Oscar, a gorgeous well behaved German Shepard, whose real name is Hunter. In the upcoming season, Essman says Oscar has a major story line. “Last season he played a pivotal role in a few episodes with me. In the January season, he will play an even more pivotal role.” We are just going to have to wait until the season begins to see this pivotal role since Essman is keeping it a secret.
Essman’s true love however, is at her home in New York City. There residesMaggie, short for Magnolia, a small stuffed animal like ten. year-old Shih Tzu and the true bearer of Essman’s heart. Essman admits that Maggie is a bit of a spoiled pup, unlike Oscar on the show. When asked about the main difference between the two, Essman states “Oscar comes when he is called, and Maggie does what she wants to. Oscar is a good watchdog, very sweet and well trained. However, I really can’t complain about Maggie, she is the perfect New York City dog. They are hard to compare.”
This is Essman’s second year working with Oscar (Hunter). “I like to think he knows who I am. We have done a few important scenes.
Oscar just has those deep soulful eyes. When Maggie looks at me with those eyes she wants something. When Oscar does he wants to do something for me,” says Essman. Her take on emotional bonds with dogs is, “they all serve different purposes. When one dies you think you can never love another one again, but you just love differently. I once had a collie Shepard that was my husband, Maggie is my daughter.”
As a closing remark on her two furry friends, Essman says, “Maggie and Oscar are so different. Oscar is the big strong man that wants to take care of me that doesn’t exist. Maggie is just a princess.”
