Sophie B. Hawkins got her first master from the ASPCA, a cat named Slater. She couldn’t bear touring and leaving her behind and cared more for Slater than her career. Many years into the relationship, while promoting her third album, Timbre, Hawkins left her cat in the care of her parents and she ran away. Now Hawkins’ master is Owl from the 9th Street pound who healed and protected Hawkins for twelve wild years, and now watches over her dachshunds, and newborn son, Dashiell. It is Virginia, however, the animal child she wrote about in Animal Fair, who best represents her being on Earth, and Hawkins’ sincerest wish since Virginia’s passing is that she is Dashiell’s angel.
