March 13, 1942 is the official birthday of the United States K9 Corps, which is the perfect day to honor those four-legged friends who have served and protected us. Dogs are amazing creatures and continue to obtain new and new jobs every day. Being a K9 dog entitles the pooch to assist in the aid of firemen, policemen and army men all around the nation. Today is a day to honor those dogs that have sacrificed their selves to the well being of our country.

Joseph J White of Jacksonville, Florida started K9 Veterans Day. White is a Vietnam veteran as well as a former military dog handler. His goal is to not only honor these dog veterans but to also enlighten the world of the outstanding services that canines have and continue to provide for the well being of humanity.

Military dogs date back to World War I, where they were in the trenches of France. They are an important part of war history because they have served, suffered and died throughout wars where there main position was to save the lives of humans. Down the line dogs have been trained to work with firefighters, policemen and local TSA officers. These dogs have developed incredible skills that are used in a pursuit of action.

K-9 veterans day is celebrated across the nation by several police and council stations. “The Wilimington police department is incredibly proud of both these great officers and their hard working canine partners” said Cpl. Mark Ivey, a Wilimington Police spokesman. “We’re very proud of our hardworking dogs.” Ivey is just one of the many people who organizes an event each year that honors the canine veterans – as well as pampers them! To give back to the veteran canines many of these events offer canine massages, nail trimmings and even grooming!
