Reiki & Pet Relaxation: A Hands-On Approach

Is your pet frazzled as you both recently moved to a new home environment? Does your canine feel insecure because he feels he’s losing his alpha dog status to the new human baby you just brought home from the hospital? Does the outside bird that chirps and flies past the glass window taunt your indoor cat? Hands down, your stressed out pet is in dire need of Reiki relaxation and healing.

Reiki is a Japanese spiritual technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It originated during the early part of the 20th century by founder Mikao Usui, a Buddhist monk. Reiki is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through all of us including animals. If that life force is compromised and lowered it can cause stress or illness, and if it is high, we are more likely to be happy and healthy.

Former business executive and opera singer, Margaret Ann Case, BA, Reiki Master, RPP has been a recognized leader and innovator in the teaching of Reiki and spiritual healing, as well as an esteemed healing practitioner for the past

Reiki in Action

14 years. When Animal Fair asked about a typical Reiki healing session with an animal Case shared, “In a session with a domesticated animal, especially cats and dogs, I take time at the beginning for the approach to the animal. I sit at the same level as the animal but not too close. I also begin speaking to them mentally to let them know why I’m there. This gives the animal some space and time to get to know me a bit. Once that has taken place, then I often start by touching the chest and back, or some other place if the animal itself indicates where it wants to be touched. Once they get more comfortable with my touch and the flow of the Reiki energy transmission coming into their body, trust is established and the animal usually relaxes into the session. From that point the animal itself is the best guide for me of where I should place my hands. Sensitivity to the guidance from the animal is very important. With larger domesticated animals, or with wild animals, I might not touch, but transmit the Reiki energy using the symbols, distance transmission, and animal communication techniques.”

The more experienced a practitioner is, the more likely they are able to sense what’s going on with the animal.

The Reiki practitioner uses their hands to transmit the healing force to treat the whole person or animal including body, emotions, mind, and spirit creating many positive effects that include feelings of peace, security and well-being.

As a seasoned Reiki practitioner, Case further explains an animal’s healing experience, “The more experienced a practitioner is, the more likely they are able to sense what’s going on with the animal. Also, if they have developed intuitive skills and trained in animal communication techniques, they receive direct responses from the animal itself. However, it is important to realize that Reiki is spiritual healing, which means that the healing is guided by spirit and not by the practitioner. The practitioner is simply a conduit for the Reiki energy to flow through them. The guidance of where to place their hands on or above the body, as well as what is it for, is from the greater intelligence of the spiritual energy. How much is received is up to how open an animal, or a person, is to receiving the spiritual energy.”

Maybe animals have been silently aware of the Reiki healing power in a human’s gentle touch more than we have. For centuries dogs and cats have loved to have their fur pet and bellies rubbed! Who’s healing whom?
