Puppy Playtime During a Pandemic

Having fun and staying safe!

2020 will go down in history as the year of the coronavirus pandemic. We’ve all been asked to stay inside, social distance, and isolate ourselves. Naturally, this isolating behavior has led to some people coming up with some pretty creative ways to entertain themselves. And the dogs of the world are LOVING it! Here are our favorite ways to have fun with your pup during a pandemic!

Mental Stimulation

What’s in your bag of tricks?

One of the easiest ways to entertain yourself and your pup in isolation is to learn new tricks! Training behaviors is a great way to mentally stimulate your pup. Whether your dog is a puppy starting training from scratch, or an older pooch with some training experience, building their behavior base is a great way to get them (and you!) focused and excited.

The trick to tricks is learning what your dog responds to. Not all dogs are treat motivated! Some dogs will more readily respond to toys, pets, or praise. Training behaviors is also another great way to create a healthy, strong bond between you and your pet, as you are working as a team to accomplish a goal. So, get those paws ready for some “high-fives” and those tails ready for turning and learn some fun new tricks! If you’re stuck, check out this list of activities!

Physical Stimulation

Get your bodies movin’!

Another great way to pass time during the COVID crisis is simply to MOVE. We’ve all found ourselves lounging and snuggling with our pups for hours on end, and while the snuggles are appreciated by both parties, don’t forget to get up and movin’!

Whether it’s the two of you going for a walk, jog, or bike around the neighborhood, your AND your pup’s bodies will appreciate the movement, fresh air, and sunshine! When headed for the great outdoors, make sure you are still practicing the social distancing regulations recommended in your area.

Backyard Buddies

Creativity is key!

If you are one of the lucky ones to have a backyard, USE IT! Get back there and get creative! From playing fetch to setting up an agility course or playing in the sprinklers, the backyard is a great space to get outside and have some fun while maintaining isolation. Check out this guide to creating your own backyard agility course!

Whatever you and your pandemic puppy partner decide to do, focus on mentally and physically stimulating activities, and you’re guaranteed to come out of quarantine with some new tricks and a bond that is stronger than ever!
