Picasso is having a renaissance in New York City and is the bark of the town! Two noted galleries recently opened exhibitions featuring Picasso.
The Gagosian Gallery is presenting Picasso and the Camera, curated by Picasso biographer John Richardson. The exhibition reveals how Picasso used photography for over sixty years as an inspirational tool and studio practice. Photography pieces include many photos taken by Picasso but never before seen or published! The show is running now until January 3rd, 2015.
Pace Gallery unveiled over the past weekend Picasso & Jacqueline: The Evolution of Style. The exhibition features nearly 140 works by Pablo Picasso created in the last two decades of his life while living with the love of his life and muse, and then later, wife, Jacqueline Roque. The works cover when Picasso starting living with Jacqueline in 1954 when she was 27-years-old and he was 73-years-old (never too late to find true love)! The show is running now until January 10th, 2015.
A brief barkstory: In 1881, Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga, Spain, where he studied painting, sculpting and printmaking. He is considered one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, and is acclaimed for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture and the co-invention of collage. Picasso’s body of work is unparalleled in scope, by the time he died at the age of 91 he signed over 45,000 art pieces.
Picasso often included his beloved Dachshund named Lump in his artwork. The furry muse had cameo appearances in Picasso’s masterpieces, such as his renditions of Valazquez’s Las Meninas. When Picasso first met Lump, he was instantly inspired and created a plate with his image on it, and their bond was soulfully and artistically sealed.
Picasso once quipped about animals and art, “God is really only another artist. He invented the giraffe, the elephant and the cat. He has no real style; he just goes on trying other things.”
