Tip your cowboy hats to The SPCA of Texas as the recipient of the CESAR® Five Dog Bone Award for the most Pet-Friendly Shelter of 2009! The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Texas was voted by Animal Fair’s loyal readers as alpha dog because of its mission to provide all animals with exceptional care and loving homes. A non-profit organization founded in 1938, The SPCA of Texas is the leading animal welfare agency in North Texas providing herds of programs and services that bring people and animals together to enrich one another’s lives.
The SPCA of Texas is a Reservation Required Shelter meaning that they will not euthanize any animal due to lack of space and there are no time limits, so pets can saddle up for as long as they need! This welfare agency is comprised of two shelters, two spay/neuter clinics, and a satellite adoption center located in Dallas and McKinney.
Homes are found for over 9,000 pets a year while 22,000 are spayed and neutered annually.
Along with providing spay and neuter procedures for their potential adopted animals, The SPCA of Texas includes age-appropriate vaccinations, a microchip, de-worming, and a 14-day guarantee. This way you can rest assured that your cuddly addition to the family is in great health when you bring them to their new home. Reservations are also available daily for animal surrenders and transfers as long as space is available and the pet can pass the behavior and health evaluations. Animals are even transferred across the Texas frontier to different agencies, increasing their chance of adoption.
Fallout from the current economic state of our country has led to home foreclosures and pet abandonment. Unfortunately, many animals are being left behind to fend for themselves in terrible conditions, chained to abandoned structures with little to no food or safety.
Thanks to The SPCA of Texas, some of these animals are being saved and brought to loving security by its volunteers. These rescued animals are then given the medical treatment they so desperately need and are then spayed and neutered if they have not been already. After being treated with such cruelty and carelessness, The SPCA of Texas provides these animals with hope, love, and the chance to be adopted by families who will give them the affection and care they deserve and require.
Recently, The SPCA of Texas was awarded custody by the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Department, two abandoned and starving dogs that were seized from a property near Canton, Texas. The night of the rescue, the female dog went into labor giving birth to a litter of stillborn puppies. Emergency surgery was then done in order to save her life. It was later discovered that both of the dogs tested positive for heartworm.
Thanks to concerned neighbors who noticed that the property had been vacated leaving behind two tied up emaciated dogs, The SPCA of Texas was notified and immediately came to the rescue. After enduring needless days of pain and agony, these dogs were finally taken to safety, simply due to the dedicated workers at The SPCA of Texas. This heartwarming story touched our readers to the core and gave further affirmation that this shelter is worthy of the CESAR® Five Dog Bone Award.
The SPCA of Texas continues to reach out to the community by bringing people and animals together. Their Compassion Connection program offers animal assisted activities and therapy for hospitalized individuals, retirement homes and rehab centers. Everyone knows that having an animal’s unconditional love in their lives is good for the mind, body and soul. They feel the same way about us humans!
Maura Davies, Senior Director of Communications, assures us that The SPCA of Texas is not just any shelter. She comments, “What makes The SPCA of Texas unique is not only our corps of dedicated staff and volunteers and the wonderfully engaged Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex community who has supported us in our mission of providing every animal exceptional care and a loving home for going on 71 years. But the depth and range of the programs and services we’re able to provide to people and pets in our community because of that support. We’re the voice for the animals who cannot speak for themselves, and we’re humbly thankful to be a part of a community that values animals as beloved members of the family.”
Education regarding how to properly care for animals is shared with the community in an effort to increase awareness regarding how important these special creatures are in our world. Accepting volunteers as young as 12-years-old, (accompanied by an adult) The SPCA of Texas is determined to instill knowledge of animal protection and rescue in everyone and encourages them to make a contribution of their time and love.
