Humans have about five million cells devoted to the sense of smell. Cats have close to two hundred million, and so could be the choosiest fragrance customers on the planet. Nevertheless, Parisian perfumiers Laurent Jugeau, Etienne de Swardt and Olivier Echaudemaison remain undaunted. Their scent for felines, Oh My Cat?, hit stores worldwide in late summer.
This new fragrance follows hot on the heels (or paws) of the success of Oh My Dog!, a parfum pour pooches which was the first product by Jugeau and de Swardt’s company ‘Dog Generation.’ Dogs liked Oh My Dog!, but humans made it a hit. Perhaps Jugeau and de Swardt had this in mind when they recommended owners apply Oh my Dog! by spraying it on their hands then running them through their dog’s fur. The scent has definitely rubbed off, becoming a popular fragrance for humans among upscale Manhattanites, sophisto Parisians, and, oddly enough, Japanese club kids. Though this turn towards people chic surprised the perfume’s creators, they say there’s no reason people shouldn’t appreciate the Oh My Dog! bouquet of rosewood, vanilla and sandlewood.
“In blind tests on humans,” Jugeau claims, “our perfume was rated higher than Chanel’s Allure.” Earlier this year, Dog Generation unveiled a follow-up product, Oh My Dog is Fresh!. Fresh, a summer themed cooling spray along the lines of Evian Mist, comes in a bottle specially designed to spray soundlessly, freshening Rover without frightening him.
While the need to keep Rover smelling fresh is obvious to any dog owner, the creators of Oh My Cat? see their new scent more as an homage than cover-up. This fragrance is a tribute to the lineage of luxury long associated with the feline form. The Egyptian olive leaf in the fragrance’s middle notes, for example, harkens back to the time of the pharaohs, when cats consorted with royalty and were worshipped as gods. Other olfactory hints in the perfume include mandarin, bergamot, cedar, sandalwood, amber and vanilla. Some exist in quantities detectable to cats but not humans, making Oh My Cat? a truly feline fragrance.
All of Jugeau and de Swardt’s pet perfumes are developed in conjection with scent experts Bernard Ellena and Maurice Roussel of Dragcco, as well as the Maison Alfort Veterinary School in France, so you know your pets are getting the very best.
