When choosing a family dog, most people go out of their way to hunt down the ‘perfect specimen’ of their ‘perfect breed’. Each breed is known for certain traits; some are retrievers, some are lapdogs, some like kids, some like quiet time. And many people don’t go adopt from a shelter in fear that they won’t find that there. Why? Because they’re full of MUTTS.
But the thing most people don’t realize is this: mutts actually have MORE PROS than cons when comparing to purebreds!
1) Mutts are a mix of multiple breeds! This means a variety of things!
They’re like ice cream with all your favorite toppings; you get the best traits of all the breeds! What’s even better than that? Often times, having the genes of multiple breeds tends to knock out genes that make a certain purebred prone to specific diseases and ailments! This results in your dog being generally healthier overall, because they have the stronger genes of the different breeds! I’d say that’s a pretty important consideration when choosing a dog!
2) Mutts are multiple breeds, which means they can be a different one each day!
This can certainly be a fun game to play, especially when entering them in a competition! Since they have the ability to fall under multiple categories, you get to choose! Each time, your pup gets to start again as a clean slate! I think the right choice is clear…
3) You learn the true meaning of “it’s what’s on the inside that counts”!
Chances are, your mutt will be gorgeous. But you won’t be focusing on labeling him or her as a specific breed, which means you can associate them with their personality traits and qualities that actually say something about them. Didn’t your mom always teach you not to judge a book by its cover?
4) You’ll be aiding in the fight against puppy mills!
Often times, when people go to buy a purebred, they’re not sure where to look, and end up getting a puppy from somewhere that really shouldn’t be selling them to begin with! When getting a mutt, you don’t need to worry about getting involved in that! Now that saves you a lot of time and stress!
5) You’ll be giving them a home that they truly need!
75% of dogs in animals shelters are mixed-breeds. This means that by choosing a mutt, you are saving a life. And who knows? That mutt might just end up saving yours one day! Is any other explanation really necessary?
