Baltimore native Michael Phelps is inarguably one of the best swimmers of all time. Ironically, his English Bull Dog,Herman,is arguably one of the laziest dogs of all time. “When the alarm goes off in the morning for workout he’ll look up at me and he’s almost squinty-eyed,like,‘What are you doing up?’”says Phelps about his canine companion. Although Herman takes a backseat in Phelps’training, the dog shares striking similarities with his owner when Phelps is out of the water. “We have the same exact personality. When I’m out of the pool I’m lazy and I just want to sit there on the couch and do nothing …he’ll just come up and watch TV with me.”
Now,with the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing quickly approaching,Phelps is determined to shatter more records and increase his already extensive resume of accomplishments. Herman’s plans are less ambitious;he’ll watch his father on television while Phelp’s sister takes care of him. A partial list of Phelp’s current accomplishments would include 29 US National Titles,20 world records,17 world championships, six gold and two bronze medals in the 2004 Summer Games in Athens (marking him one of only two men to win eight medals in one game) in addition to being the youngest male record holder in modern history. As for Herman,he’s unphased by his father’s accomplishments. The proof is when the pair lie down for bed.“I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone snore as loud as he does,”says Phelps of Herman. Herman should get used to his father’s intense regiment, however. Phelps plans on swimming all the way to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
