In the upcoming film Good Boy, starring Liam Aiken, dogs try to take over the world. Liam speaks out on this phenomenon and warns us that there’s more to our canine friends.
Earth is being invaded! This time, however, the invaders are not tall green men but rather, man’s best friend, our cuddly canines! That’s right, the dogs are taking over in the movie Good Boy, coming out this October. Starring in this film is Liam Aiken playing the character Owen Baker. This thirteen-year-old actor has already appeared in numerous films such as Road to Perdition, Sweet November, I Dreamed of Africa and Step Mom. On acting, Liam says his favorite thing thus far is, “that you can become someone else, it makes your life more adventurous. It allows you to be whoever you want to be.”
In Good Boy, Liam is given the chance to experiment with the role of a boy whose dog, Hubble, a lovable terrier (voiced by Mathew Broderick), is actually an interplanetary scout from the Dog Star, Sirius. Hubble has been sent to Earth to remind the dogs of their mission to “colonize and dominate Earth.” Liam’s character gets the surprise of his summer when he discovers that his adopted dog can talk. A malfunction with Hubble’s communicator to Sirius has given Owen the ability to listen and talk to dogs. Owen therefore must help Hubble train the rowdy neighborhood dogs and get them ready for the visit from their leader, the mighty Greater Dane.
The cast of Good Boy includes such stars as Molly Shannon, Kevin Nealon, Brittany Murphy and Carl Reiner. Liam states that Kevin Nealon was particularly humorous on the set and recalls him doing lots of funny “little things.”
In asking whether he finds it easier to work with a dog as his co-star or another human being, Liam states, “I would lean more towards working with another person. It’s easier because you can actually get feedback from the person. You can have a conversation with a person, where with a dog, you have someone else in the background saying their lines. As you say to them, ‘hey how are you’, someone in the background answers, good how are you?” and it kind of distracts your Sadly, the terrier that plays Hubble and Liam never formed a real relationship on the set. *In the beginning of the movie, the trainer didn’t want me hanging out with the dog much because in the movie, the dog doesn’t really want any friends, so he’s supposed to be reluctant to play. I think it really benefited the movie though, because in the end you see that it really works,” explains Aiken. Luckily, Liam has had the chance to form a meaningful relationship with another dog post-filming, his adopted Italian Greyhound named Kes, much like the one who plays Nelly in the movie.
Liam also tells us that pups do get a bit of the royal treatment like all celebrities. “When they come on the set everyone awes and comes over and says hi and pets them. So they do get a lot of attention,” says Aiken. The cues and kisses don’t last for long however, when the trainer takes them away to focus on their canine commands.
Good Boy is an eye opener to any dog owner. Maybe there’s a secret behind those big brown eyes of your pooch too! Is Sparky’s plan really just to dig up the garden, or something more?
