To Susie Essman, finding happiness was easier than she initial thought. “For years I was single, looking for a guy to rescue me. I didn’t know that it wasn’t until I rescued a guy, albeit another species, that I would find true happiness” she told Animal Fair. Essman adopted her adorable Shih Tzu, Sumo, who is completely devoted to her and vice versa. “No one in my life has ever been so excited to see me walk into a room than this dog. Not my boyfriend, not my step-children, not even my grandmother has ever jumped up when I walked through the door” she told us. The comedienne, who got her start in the New York comedy club circuit, is known for her hysterical expletives and matter-of-fact comedy in the HBO original series, Curb Your Enthusiasm. When we asked her to compare her co-star and creator Larry David to a dog, she told us he is “a Hound Dog because he just gets a scent and he goes after it.” Essman also lends her talent along with John Travolta, Woody Harrelson and Mario Cantone in the upcoming animated, animal-themed film Bolt.
When Animal Fair sat down with Susie, we wanted to talk about dogs, men, and love, the subject of my docu-comedy In Search of Puppy Love. Sumo isn’t selective, in fact, he has taught Essman about playing the field. “He walks down the streets, he meets another dog, he sniffs it, either he wants to play and be friends, or he walks away and nobody’s feelings are hurt, its not personal, nobody feels rejected.” As for the sexual side of things? “You want a guy that’s good in bed? Find a guy with a Shih Tzu or a Pomeranian or a little Yorkie, because if he’s secure enough in his sexuality to carry around a fru fru little dog like that, that is a guy who’s a keeper.” One final warning from Susie: “Never ever ever ever go out with a guy with a Beagle. I know they’re cute cute cute, but they’re dumb dumb dumb and they have no attention span, so you’re with the guy and [he might not know what to do] the next night you have to tell him all over again.”
Essman is a huge advocate of animal adoption, just don’t take Sumo! “I rescued this little guy, okay, look at that face, he’s the love of my life, go get your own, you can’t have him.” Flip forward to check out Essman in our enclosed 2008 Anniversary Calender!
