Armed with a “surprise” in her hand for her companion Winny, Bella Baek strutted into a dog café in Korea. She had no idea that her “surprise”, a sofa for Winnie who is a dog, would be such a hit among dogs and their owners who dined at the café that she would be compelled to make dog furniture with her pal, Taeyoung Oh.
After receiving such rave reviews, the duo went to a furniture factory and asked the manager to make ten sofas. With no knowledge on how well the sofas would sell, Baek and Oh distributed their sofas to pet boutiques. “That was how we started Louisdog!” Oh stated proudly.
Five years later the company has extended there product line to include toys, accessories, mats, cooling substances, rugs, cashmere, and collars. According to Oh, the company needed to begin manufacturing other items that were easy to sell at a relatively low price compared to furniture. “It was easy to attract people’s interests but it is hard to turn this interest into real sales,” Oh said. Now the Louisdog brand is selling across the country and in department stores in Europe.
This company has no problem with keeping up with main stream fashion. In 2002 Louisdog introduced the dog carrier to their apparel line. Because 80 percent of the company’s customers are females who are in the age range of 20 to 30, designers at Louisdog do not hesitate to offer an array of products that suite their taste. “Louisdog design is being created from the customer’s perspective,” Oh said.
