How his dogs Jolie & Roxie have enhanced his earthly & otherworldly awareness
John Edwards is an inspiration to many people through “his powerful knowledge and connection with those who have “crossed over” from our world. He touches the lives of people across the country through his show Crossing Over with John Edward and through his books, After Life Answers from the Other Side, Crossing Over, and One Last Time. John’s personal inspiration comes from his family, which includes his wife Sandra, son Justin, and his two “pet” girls Jolie and Roxie. My love for my girls is “beyond words,” describes John. Unlike his son Justin, Jolieand Roxie are a different breed; they are two pure white Bichon Frises.
Growing up in a small apartment in Queens, New York, “John was not allowed to have any pets. When he finally had a place of his own, John adopted Jolie, who he brought home in 1994 around Christmas time. Ever since Jolie and his adoption of Roxie a few years later, John has been mesmerized by his dogs!
John’s favorite ways to spend time with his girls are to play catch and tug of war with them. Jolie, in particular loves belly massages. John claims that if he says “massage” from across the house, Jolie will come running, plop on the couch, and roll over belly up ready for her massage.
Upon bringing their new baby Justin home for the first time to meet the girls, John and his wife Sandra were very dog savvy with the adjustment. Before bringing the baby home, John brought a blanket of Justin’s for the girls to become familiar with his smell. Then, on the day of introduction John “being the dominant figure in the house”, first approached the girls and gave them an abundance of attention while Sandra slowly brought baby Justin in and set him along side John. “People warned us about problems with jealousy, but we have had no problems,” Edwards said.
John recalled an amusing experience with his dogs when one of his girls turned up missing. After searching and calling throughout every room, John went so far as to call his wife at work and ask where the dog was. As he stood in his living room he could hear her breathing from up above. One would assume that John was having one of his crossing over experiences, however, when he heard her from “up above,” it was from the thick wood beams that stretch across his ceiling. Miraculously the dog had crawled out onto a beam and was sitting there high above John’s head. “She just looked like ‘yeah I am here and I am stuck,’ he said.
Everyone knows John is famous for his work with humans who have passed on. John points out that your pets are just like our family members and become “part of the spirit family.” John has experienced several instances where he will start by listing, for example someone’s Aunt Jillian, Uncle Lee, or Great Cousin JoAnna but when he mentions he also acknowledges the presence of Peaches the poodle, the person will begin to break down in tears. John states that “we have a special bond with our pets and when one leaves we are left with a huge gaping whole.”
John explains that when we lose a pet we need to love them beyond the average short 10 years of their life. His advice to any grieving pet owner is to keep family videos and toys around. John says it is best to appreciate and honor their memory. It is better to deal with the pain and loss than to shut down. Like any dog lover, John stated that he will always have dogs in his life, but will never be able to replace Jolie and Roxie once they have crossed over.
