Hotel For Dogs 02
Friday (left) is truly Bruce’s (Jake T. Austin, right) best friend in Hotel for Dogs

The year is slowly coming to an end, the weather is getting cooler and it’s time to pull your pooch’s best sweaters and booties out of the closet. With some entertaining movies starring some A-list barkers about to be released over the next few months, your pet will be excited to hop in that Juicy Couture dog carrier and let you race all the way to the movie theatre!

The first flick up for review is Disney’s much anticipated CGI animated film Bolt. Directed by Chris Williams, this is a story about a dog that plays a super-hero faced with adventure, danger and excitement on a TV show, where, after the cameras stop rolling, believes himself to literally be the super- dog he plays. When Bolt (voice of John Travolta) is accidentally shipped from his Hollywood soundstage to New York City, he comes nose-to-nose with the real world as he begins his long adventure back home. Along the way he makes friends with a cat named Mittens (voice of Susie Essman), and a TV- obsessed hamster in a plastic ball named Rhino. Are they ready for the tough journey? Rhino is one roll ahead, informing Bolt “ I eat danger for breakfast!” With the help and encouragement of his new pals, Bolt soon realizes that he doesn’t need super powers to be a super hero! Also lending her voice for the character Penny is Hannah Montana’s alter ego Miley Cyrus, but she is not the only star in the family! Her two dogs Roadie, a Yorkie, and Loco, a Shih Tzu, made the top of Animal Fair magazine’s Most Eligible Pets list at the beginning of the year. Not only are they good looking, but it doesn’t hurt that they have backstage passes to all of Miley’s sold out concerts, making them envied by all pets and teenage girls alike. This movie is one of Disney’s major 3D releases for 2008, and is sure to deliver some well-deserved a-paws!

Another Disney release is Beverly Hills Chihuahua, directed by Raja Gosnell, and stars the voices of Drew Barrymore, George Lopez, Andy Garcia and Cheech Marin. This pup pleaser is about Chloe (voice of Barrymore), a designer dud wearing Chihuahua from Beverly Hills, who is so caught up in her luxurious lifestyle that she hardly notices Papi (voice of Lopez), who is head-over-paws for the pampered pooch. Barking to a girlfriend “ it’s not easy to find a mate with papers,” it is clear that this Beverly Hills vixen is looking for quality! It is no surprise, though, that when Chloe finds herself lost on the rough streets of Mexico with only the help of a street-wise German Sheperd to help her find her way home, that Papi heads down south with an entourage of two humans, a sly rat and a nervous iguana to rescue his lady love. Finding the way back home can also lead to the finding of new friendships and tail-wagging adventure. Drew Barrymore, who is an avid dog lover, lived her own rescue adventure when her adopted chow-yellow Lab mix Flossie saved her life by barking and banging on the actresses bedroom door, warning her of a fire ripping through her Beverly Hills home in 1998. Barrymore awoke just in time to escape with Flossie, her live-in boyfriend at the time Tom Green, and her two other pups Highla Flopsie and Templeton. With pets like that who needs to worry!

Just in time for Christmas is the release of Marley and Me, which stars Jennifer Aniston, Owen Wilson, Alan Arkin and Eric Dane. Marley is a yellow lab that is adopted by a young couple in order to give them a little taste of parenthood. This quickly turns into a furry fiasco when Marley proves to be a hyperactive handful by wreaking havoc everywhere he goes, and even gets kicked out of obedience school! In the end, like all good paw pleasers, he becomes part of the family as they all live puppily ever after! Keeping Jennifer company while shooting in Miami was her real life canine companion Norman, a Welsh Corgi-terrier mix who is a fixture on most of the actress’ film sets. She and Norman even posed together for Elle magazine in 2005, talk about a true best bud! Directed by David Frankel, Marley and Me is based on the memoir by John Grogan, and will surely be a family favorite.

Ringing in the New Year is the Dreamworks Pictures comedy Hotel for Dogs, directed by Thor Freudenthal. The film stars Emma Roberts and Jake T. Austin, who play Andi and Bruce, sister and brother that are forbidden to have a pet. In an effort to find a home for their new dog Friday, the two siblings stumble upon an abandoned hotel, and with Bruce’s mechanical talents, they are able to transform the old building into wonderful dog-paradise for Friday. Soon after all of Friday’s friends get wind of the doggie hotel, and when all the barking dogs make the neighbors suspicious, Andi and Bruce must use their imagination and every invented contraption they have to avoid anyone finding out “who let the dogs in.” Although Emma’s favorite pet is a dog, she owns two cats named Coco Chanel and Pirate. Jake T. Austin, star of Wizards of Waverly Place on the Disney Channel, is also a dog lover and owns two pooches of his own named Bogey and Beju. This movie features dogs of all shapes and sizes, and will have you appreciating your furry friend even more!
