Colin Cowie is a modern lifestyle guru who’s done it all. A native of Zambia and South Africa, he moved to the US at age twenty-three to start his style empire. Since then he’s designed housewares lines for JC Penney and Wal-Mart, hosted TV shows like Everyday Elegance, edited for In Style and O magazines, and thrown grand soirees for big names like Oprah Winfrey, Jerry Seinfeld, and Tom Cruise. At the end of each fabulous day he comes home to his loyal Cocker Spaniel, Oscar, one of our Most Eligible Pets.
With a dad who has built his career on providing luxury to people, it stands to reason that Oscar would have a taste for the finer things in life. Named after Oscar Wilde, the original dandy, Oscar demands and receives star treatment each and every day. “He goes everywhere in a town car and when I’m traveling;” Cowie tells us, “my car service bills are higher when I’m out of town than when I’m in town.” He also “dislikes going to the vet” so Cowie arranges for the vet to come to him. For breakfast, he gets brown rice and eggs, and then “Eli’s bread crisps as snacks during the day … he doesn’t really eat dog food any longer.” When asked if Oscar is a bit spoiled, Cowie admits “majorly so!”
Oscar prefers people to dogs, so he’s never done any entertaining of his own. However, Cowie does have a few tips for those who would like to attempt a canine fete: “Keep it outside. Have lots of water, snacks, and poopy bags handy. Never let the owners leave.” On the general topic of keeping a home with pets “spic and span” he adds, “Train your pets properly and you won’t need to make special accommodations. They don’t belong on the furniture unless invited. I have an ‘Oscar comforter’ made in the matching fabric to my comforter which is placed at the bottom of the bed. Oscar knows it’s his spot.” Wise words from a loving yet sensible dad.
After over two decades of exhaustive pampering, Oscar is taking it easy. He used to accompany his dad to parties, but now prefers to spend his days relaxing at home. According to Cowie his celebrity twin would be, “Marlon Brando living on an island, eating all he wants, getting fat, having children with different wives and living the good life.” A most enviable life from any standpoint, and a most eligible pet indeed!
