Dog Biscuits With A Purpose: Not Just Your Dog’s Favorite Treat

Canines have aided people with disabilities for years as a means of improving the quality of life. Meet Hepburn, one of our Most Eligible Pets, who spends her days bringing joy to the disabled community. Hepburn is an Old English Sheepdog with beautiful gray & white markings. She is the playful, intelligent and energetic companion of Brother Rick Curry, S.J., Founder and Artistic Director of the National Theatre Workshop of the Handicapped (NTWH). The NTWH is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing the disabled community with skills to pursue a life in the profession of all aspects of theater. These students also obtain skills that are essential in other workplaces and everyday life.

Hepburn is a favorite among her peers. She often sits in on rehearsals and enjoys watching the students work on their monologues, scenes or songs. Admittedly, Hepburn likes the breaks best of all, when she has everyone’s full attention. After school, this cuddly canine enjoys pounding the pavement in the Soho area of New York City, just two blocks from her favorite dog run on the Hudson River Park. You can usually find her pawing around with her much smaller siblings, Havernese playmates Tugboat (almost 2 years old) and Bancroft (4 months). Brother Curry, born missing a right forearm, is easily able to handle Hepburn because of her exceptional nature.

Hepburn could hardly control her excitement about NTWH’s newest installment – Belson Bakery, where students learn basic business skills while preparing to become professional bakers. Brother Rick Curry and the students wanted to give something back to the dogs who serve them so loving … dog biscuits! They sell four delicious choices: Baked Doggie Treats, Not Really Chocolate Snack, Rye and Whole Wheat. Each biscuit is made with all natural ingredients, and they are hand cut and baked by people with disabilities.

Brother Curry’s Miraculous Dog Biscuits were devised to draw attention to the school’s dog program, where they train dogs to be companions to disabled people. They are also used to employ people with disabilities in the making of dog biscuits and to help with revenue in support of NTWH programs. Only one thing comes to mind when Animal Fair thinks about Brother Curry and his adorable pooch, Hepburn. This twosome is truly heaven sent!
