Most Eligible Pet 2004: Chester, “Chairdog” of the Board for Canine Hardware

What could be sweeter than a chocolate kiss? A kiss from Chester of course! This gorgeous Chesapeake Bay Retriever was the pick of the litter in the parking lot of a chocolate shop in Issaquah, Washington. Seven years later, he is one of the most eligible pets! Chester is the heir and “Chairdog” of a top company, which caters to canines—Canine Hardware, makers of the top dog toy, Chuckit!.

Chester’s parents, Mariel Head and Mark Oblack, established Canine Hardware in 1998. Who better to bring on board than someone who has his paw on the pulse of dogdom? Chester was the obvious choice for product development and quality control. He presides over a team of four-legged product testers, who are owned by company employees. It’s all about nepotism in the dog-world of business! This dedicated pooch is known to be quite focused and intense while on the job. When it is time to test something new for the Canine Hardware line, he waits eagerly by the testing area ready to get to work.

In addition to his Chairdog of the Board duties, Chester is the official “spokesdog” for the line of Hardware products. This slice of fame has garnered him innumerable amounts of fan mail. Dogs and owners alike have written Chester praising his beauty while asking to meet him. Molly, a four-year-old dog from Grand Rapids, Michigan, and her mom, Mindy, wrote: “. . . I think I would like to meet Chester, please. If you are ever in Michigan, look us up!”

But Chester is not an all work and no play dog! This executive dog makes time for family and fun, combining the two in most cases.

He heads out for a run every morning with his mom and also enjoys hiking and taking long walks, which he finds relaxing. If Chester is near water, he can’t resist jumping in for a swim. It’s clear this eligible dog is quite health conscious and keeps in tip-top shape for the ladies! But, don’t be fooled by his charming personality and dashingly handsome looks—Chester has a mischievous streak. When his owners aren’t watching, he entertains himself by stealing shoes. As soon as your back is turned, your shoes mysteriously disappear. True to his Retriever nature, Chester will never say ‘No’ to a game of fetch.

It doesn’t come as a surprise that Chester’s favorite toy in the world is Chuckit! When he is ready to play, he will drop one at his playmates’ feet. As soon as it is picked up, he bounces excitedly. Although tennis balls are Chester’s number one priority, he is very much a people dog and found a way to combine his two loves. According to Julie Rogers, Key Account Manager for Canine Harware, “When he comes into the office, Chester will grab a tennis ball and wiggle over to everybody asking to play.”

While he is a well-behaved dog, Chester’s affectionate nature turns him into a kissing fool. Mrs. Rogers admits, “He’s a lick monster; he can’t resist giving everyone kisses!” While Chester has a very busy life, he is still without that special feline to share it with. For Chester, she must be smart and focused and have a love for running and fetching tennis balls. Having experience with the Chuckit! product is a standout quality, but a more important stealthiness when it comes to stealing shoes is a must!    By Kieran O’Brien
