Doggy Coughs: Cause For Concern?

pet allergy myths 1

If we hear anyone coughing, especially in recent times, we get concerned. A cough can be a warning sign for something bad. However, it can also be be totally innocent. So, if you’re asking why is my dog coughing, read on.

“I get a treat after this, right?”

The first step is always determining the WHY of the cough. For instance, kennel cough is incredibly common, especially for younger dogs. This can come from them being in larger groups of dogs – a bit like the common cold. If their cough is a hacking, dry one then this could be the culprit. Not to fret! There are vaccines to help prevent this and antibiotics and cough suppressants can work wonders. “Why is my dog coughing” can still be a scary question to answer.

Now, if left untreated, it can turn into pneumonia which is never fun to deal with. Coughing will sound softer and wetter and they may have trouble eating or keeping food down. A trip to the vet, fluids and rest and they’ll be back on their feet!

Heart disease is just as, if not more, common as kennel cough. Your dogs may cough constantly instead of in bursts and you may notice it more at night. Once again, a trip to the vet and some heart medications should get your fur babies back in a playful mood in no time! A good veterinarian visit will work in most situations to help keep your companion safe and healthy!

At the end of the day, it’s important to remember: vet visits verify…concerns. A cough can definitely be cause for concern but almost all sources are easy to pin down and treat. Go forward into the colder seasons with confidence! Your fur babies and you can conquer any cough!
