What kind of protection do you need to head out to the beach? Of course, don’t ever forget loads of sunscreen and moisturizer, but how about your hair?
Animal Fair spoke to two of Cloutier Agency’s top stylists who share their hair care tips with you:
1) Wet your hair before going into the water.
According to Robert Vetica, a hairstylist based in Los Angeles whose clients include, Jennifer Lopez, Salma Hayek and Heather Graham, the number one mistake people make is going into the water with their hair dry. “It is the worst thing you can do. Your hair is already fried, so by the time you go into the pool or take a dive in the ocean, things just get worse,” Vetica explains. “You should always wet your hair with tap or even bottled water before taking a dip, even if you have no color work done.” Vetica speaks with the authority of his 27 years as a celebrity hairstylist. He is also a strong advocate of the use of conditioners, explaining, “Especially for color-treated hair, you need some protection. All these ingredients [chlorine and salt water] are really damaging.”
2) Keep your hair up during the hot and humid days.
“Stay away from rubber bands,” says Terri Apanasewicz, also from Cloutier Agency, noting that they cause even more stress to the hair. “Just pin it up,” she suggests. Color plastic clips can do the trick in an instant. If you choose a more elaborate style, Paul Mitchell’s Super Clean Extra Firm Holding Spray is what Apanasewicz, who has worked with Gwyneth Paltrow, Cindy Crawford and Christina Aguilera, recommends, “It is lightweight, so your hair is not stiff, but it holds the shape.”
As are most of Cloutier Agency’s professionals, Vetica and Apanasewicz are avid animal lovers committed to their welfare. Since therefore both stylists refuse to use any beauty product tested on animals, we asked them to recommend their preferred products:
Vetica picks a product from ARTec, a line he favors. “All their products are 100 percent botanical and their new Pure Hair line is aromatherapy for hair with no artificial fragrance or artificial color. My favorites are the Chamomile Aloe Moisturizing Balm and the Mandarin Bodyfying Shampoo. Vetica is the proud “father” of Mina, a Labrador-pit bull mix he rescued from a shelter in North Hollywood, tries to practice what he preaches.”She [Mina] only eats natural food, all organic and prefer to treat her using Eastern medicine,” he says.
Apanasewicz, who shares her home with four-year-old Kayla, a shepherd-yellow Labrador mix she rescued, and the “recently acquired” Rocky she got from her brother over Christmas, has a few lines she likes to work with. “I love Thick by Rusk and KMS Molding Paste, which adds body without making your hair greasy,” says the stylist. But Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhii Mist is her favorite summer product. “It is fantastic, so refreshing. You can use it as a moisturizer both on your hair and skin,” she explains.
“Kayla and I do volunteer work with an organization called ‘Love on Four Paws’ where we visit homes and schools for blind and handicapped children,” says Apanasewicz. Kayla will get her “assistant dog” certification soon. As for Rocky, a chocolate Lab who is eight, but “thinks he is really a puppy,” he is working with a trainer and hopes that some day he will follow Kayla’s steps.
