Lauri Herman worked for many years as an award winning travel writer, incessantly traveling the world with reckless abandon. By her side the whole while was Murphy, her steadfastly devoted Maltese. But that was then. Now Lauri is a worn out housewife with diaper cream embedded in her wedding band, circles under her eyes, and dark roots. She spends her days changing diapers, making baby food, fantasizing about far-flung destinations, and teaching her infant daughter the finer points of redeeming air miles for free travel. Since the baby’s arrival, her beloved Murphy, now known as Benedict Arnold, has shunned her, refusing to so much as wag her tail in her presence.
