She plays a smart and talented Swedish bombshell in the hottest show on Broadway. Cady Huffman dazzles audiences nightly as Ulla in Mel Brooks’ sold-out show The Producers at the St. James Theater. Her character, a free-spirited aspiring actress, gets her big break in the sure-to-flop play, “Springtime for Hitler,” thought up by creative accountant Leo Bloom (played by Steven Weber) and fast-talking Max Bialystock (played by Brad Oscar).
On Mondays, when Broadway is closed, Huffman retreats to the Hamptons to spend a relaxing day in her mission style home with her three cats and two dogs who always give her a standing ovation upon her arrival.
“I’ve always had a lot of cats and dogs. I don’t know how people live without them-they always make me smile and laugh,” says Cady. First there’s Father Buster, her 20 pound black cat so nicknamed for the white dot on his chest that she says makes him look a bit like a clergyman, then Norton, named after the Honeymooners’ character, and finally “Z”, so called for the Ziegfield Theater (appropriate for her line of work). She calls Buster sweet and lazy, while Norton is the mad scratcher and “funny without trying to be.” Z is loud and wiley, always getting into trouble. Cady marvels at the distinct personality differences in her pets.
As for her pups, there is her “big goofball” Jake, a coonhound shepherd (that she says looks like a giant beagle), and Wilma, a Rottweiler-Lab mix who is just “so happy to be here.” Cady rescued her animals from various shelters and actively supports organizations such as the Humane Society, Animal Haven, and the North Shore Animal League.
